Making small batch organic cheese from grass-fed cows in our on farm creamery

Making Certified Organic Brie at North Sky Farm's on-farm creamery.

Why We Got Started

One of my first jobs was growing biodynamic organic vegetables. Early on Saturday mornings rented trucks from large coastal farms would arrive at our local farmers’ market- setting up their tents to sell conventionally grown sprayed vegetables among the local sustainable growers. Their tomatoes were picture perfect and they sold’em cheap. Back then we didn’t have a name for it but now it’s called greenwashing: Corporations taking advantage of people trying to source real nutrient dense food. It didn’t feel good.

Food As A Simple Truth

Growing high quality food takes a lot of time, a lot of work and a healthy dose of sacrifice. Those coastal hot house tomatoes didn’t have a spot on them, were efficient to grow, easy to ship, and profitable to sell. But for the company that rented those trucks and the tent spots in our little market it was a business decision. When you know your farmer, you know the care that goes into their products and all that superficial stuff just stops mattering as much. What remains is simple: nourishing food raised with integrity for you and the ones you care about.

Connecting Through The Sacred Bond Of Cheese

I am totally in awe of the insane effect that delicious food can have on family and community. My obsession is that time of day- 5,6, 7pm: whenever…after work and before dinner (hors d'oeuvres, appetizers, we call it kitty hour - who knows what that means) when everyone is excited to be home, in each others company, to share about their day and it’s all centered around delicious snacks. This simple ritual is paramount and we want to do our part: providing Organic grass-fed cheese from healthy humanely treated cows for folks to gather around.

Nourishing Food

We take our food and what we do and pretty seriously. Organic grass-fed dairy is profound, it’s interpersonal powers and how cows on pasture, the eternal cloven hoof, can heal deeply eroded and broken landscapes.

Our mission is to farm in a way that strengthens and supports our community and environment. To steward the land so that we leave it better for future generations.

Gather around a Tealight Cheese Warmer or pack along cheese and bread on a hike with friends: we promise that when you know your farmer and your food, you’ll feel connected in the universe, to your people and to your place.
